Early advantage to Central in Plunket Shield

Central Districts moved to the top of the Plunket Shield standings with a 145-run win against Canterbury in Nelson on the weekend.

The home team posted 352 for seven declared in a rain-affected match in which days two and three were wiped out.

Twenty-one-year-old Willem Ludick — who was stranded on 80 not out at stumps on day one — eventually pressed on for his maiden first-class century.

Canterbury opted to declare  its first innings without batting.

Central followed suit with its second innings to set up a chase on the final day.

Seth Rance ripped through the middle order with five for 53 to help secure the win.

Auckland and Wellington had to settle for a draw in their season opener at the Basin.

The match was rain-affected as well. Wellington posted 255 with Auckland reaching 313 in reply.

Wellington was 107 for two when the game was called off.

The highlight was the century from Auckland and Black Caps opener Jeet Raval.

Northern Districts is in second place in the standings after recording an eight-wicket win against Otago at Mount Maunganui.
