England international Beth Langston has been lured back for a second stint with Otago and is hoping for more unexpected success.

The fast bowler helped the Sparks slip into the twenty20 final with some frugal spells last season.

The Sparks then stunned Canterbury to win by five runs. The team had also been targeting a place in the final of the one-day competition in which Langston had some solid returns. She was the tournament’s sixth-leading wicket-taker with 13 scalps at an average of 23.76.There is nothing like some silverware to leave you with happy memories.

"I had a really great time playing for the Sparks last season," Langston said.

"We obviously had quite a successful year and I was keen to come back and hopefully repeat that success — maybe add a one-day title to the twenty20 one as well."

Langston has played four ODIs and two T20 internationals for England. The right-armer is hoping to add to that record and will use her summer in New Zealand to push her case.

She bowled well for the Loughborough Lighting in the Super League with six wickets at an average of 14. But the team finished fourth in the six-team competition.

"It is always nice to get wickets but I would have liked to have contributed to some more team successes."

The Super League wound up on September 1. Langston has used the break to work on her action.

"It is always a bit nervous coming into games when you have not played for a couple of months but I was just eager to get going."

The opening round did go very well for the Sparks at all. Auckland had a 31-run win in the T20 fixture on Friday night and won both one-dayers by comfortable margins.

The Sparks failed miserably with the bat and Langston had some issues at the bowling crease as well. She sent down three wides and was pinged for three no-balls in the T20 match.

The following day she bowled five wides and another no-ball. But by the third game she was in better rhythm and conceded just two wides.

"I guess you could put it down to a bit of rust and nerves. I was glad I got better as the weekend went on.

"Hopefully, I can do my job and take some wickets at the top in the games coming up."

The Sparks will host a series of games against the Blaze, beginning with a T20 match tomorrow afternoon.

Wellington smashed Central Districts in its opening three games and shapes as a tough opponent.
