Volts focus on building resilience

It is resilience week for the Otago Volts and that has meant a few surprises.

Coach Rob Walter has been throwing some curve balls at the team in the hope of building some mental fortitude and physical resistance.

He had them up at 6am on Wednesday to test their skills and push them out of their comfort zone.

There have been combined red and white ball sessions with scenarios which flicked in and out of the different formats.

And a session yesterday merged a game scenario with physical exercise designed to fatigue the players.

"We've been doing some different exercises throughout the week to tap into the idea of building resilience - whether that is physical resilience or mental resilience," Walter said.

"So we've been trying to create training sessions that speak to that. For one of the sessions the guys came in at 6am and did a skills session.

"There has just been a host of different exercises around the theme."

Fast bowlers Warren Barnes and Michael Rae have avoided part of the week.

The pair left for Australia on Wednesday. They will complete their preparations for the season by playing for Northern District Cricket Club in the Sydney grade competition.

Walter said it was a good opportunity for the duo to play some one-day cricket early in the season and get some experience in the format.

Rae had a breakthrough season in the first-class competition with 29 wickets at an average of 25.10. But he has played just two one-day games for Otago.

Barnes has struggled with injuries since transferring to Otago in 2015-16.

He has not played a lot of one-day cricket either and just two first-class games. But he took nine wickets in the last game of the season and, when he is fit, he can be a potent force with both the red and white ball.

With Neil Wagner transferring to Northern Districts, Barnes and Rae shape as important cogs in the Otago attack.

"What excites me is we have a young bowling group and we know they can add value and influence the game."

Otago will head to Alexandra for a training camp in the last week of September and will play a warm-up game against Canterbury at Molyneux Park the following week.

The Volts open the Plunket Shield with a match against Northern Districts in Mount Maunganui.
