The Volts secured a five-wicket victory against the Wellington Firebirds at University Oval yesterday.

Jacob Cumming set the platform with 45 off 33 balls, but Troy Johnson’s cameo (19 off eight) and Jake Gibson (unbeaten 16 off seven) brought them home.

After a rain delay of nearly an hour, the game was reduced to 16 overs with the Volts bowling first.

Tim Robinson smacked a four and Tom Blundell guided a couple more past the ropes.

Then Ben Lockrose started something special

Robinson skied Lockrose’s delivery and Jack Boyle came racing in, skidding across the wet ground to bobble the ball and take the catch.

Lockrose nabbed another off his second over when he bowled Gareth Severin for a duck to finish with a double-wicket maiden.

The Firebirds were 19 for two at the end of four overs.

Muhammad Abbas clobbered several boundaries and Blundell punched a six on to the bank and another out of the ground.

Abbas holed out to Troy Johnson to put the Firebirds 76 for three in the 11th over.

Blundell went to scoop but mistimed it terribly, landing in the hands of Jacob Duffy to be dismissed just shy of a half-century.

Jesse Tashkoff kept the Firebirds rolling, dispatching balls over the ropes for fun.

But he, too, holed out to Troy Johnson, who flicked it back inside to Duffy to make the Firebirds 102 for five.

Duffy bowled Callum McLachlan and replacement Logan van Beek was run out the next ball.

The Firebirds finished 132 for seven.

Cumming flicked the first delivery he faced away for a six, while van Beek made a wayward start with the ball, leaking three extras.

Cumming found his feet early, using the pace to guide the ball past third man for a couple of boundaries.

The Firebirds had a nightmare passage, coughing up six extras in one over as they scrambled deep in the field.

Cumming brought up the Volts’ half-century with a boundary and just kept swinging.

The Volts finished the power play at 64 without loss — the Firebirds were 27 for two — as Cumming continued to crash them towards victory.

Jamal Todd and Cumming put on 74 runs before Todd was bowled for 11.

Cumming was removed soon after, making the Volts 78 for two.

Troy Johnson whipped six from his first ball, and collected four from his second, and kept punching the boundary.

Needing eight runs off the final over, Gibson guided the Volts home with consecutive boundaries.

The Volts are home again on Sunday to the Northern Brave.
