The Otago Volts are looking forward to the Ford Trophy, and will welcome back all-rounder Jimmy Neesham.

The side had three days off after its last game of its forgettable Super Smash campaign on January 14 but got back into training late last week. Those who were able played club cricket over the weekend.

The team trained yesterday as it began preparations for the Ford Trophy. Otago hosts Canterbury at the University Oval on Saturday.

It has won two out of three games in the Ford Trophy and sits third on the table as four teams have each won two games and lost one so.

All teams play eight games in the Ford Trophy so there is much to play for over the next few weeks.

Otago Volts coach Rob Walter said the side took some learnings from the Super Smash campaign and wanted to draw on them when it moved forward into the one-day competition.

``To be honest, what we did well was about getting ready for the Ford Trophy. We have won two out of three and we could have won the other one,'' he said.

``We need to find that same level again and stay there.''

Otago failed to fire in the twenty/20 campaign, finishing last, winning just two out of nine games.

Walter said there was always something to learn from any game but in the end the position on the points table came down to the standard stuff.

``Just the ability to form partnerships, putting pressure on in key moments with both the bat and ball. You can do as much analysis as you want but it is a game of cricket and the game has not changed that much.''

He said the Super Smash competition this year had gone up in standard from previous seasons.

There were significantly more scores above 200 this season and sides had plenty of depth in batting and bowling.

Walter felt the quality of the batting had improved throughout sides. But that competition was over and it was time to switch focus to the one-day competition.

The team had a day of surfing last week and he said it was good for players to do something different together. Most enjoyed getting in the water and it was good for the side to get away from cricket for a while.

The side had a clean bill of health apart from a few minor niggles. Josh Finnie left the field in a club game on Saturday after taking a blow to the arm but it was not believed to be serious.

All-rounder Jimmy Neesham played club cricket over the weekend, playing both Saturday and Sunday for North East Valley.

Walter said Neesham would be back training with the Otago side and be available for the side for Saturday's game.
