The four teenagers had been on a 36-hour campaign of chaos around the city starting on Monday by allegedly committing multiple petrol drive-offs in a stolen Nissan Qashqai, Acting Senior Sergeant Iain Notman, of Dunedin, said.
The CCTV at two Dunedin petrol stations showed the four youth offenders in the stolen vehicle.
By 4.30pm yesterday, the teenagers were reported to police once again, by multiple different people, for tailgating, braking erratically, and for general poor driving behaviour.
While a unit followed the car from a safe distance, units further north set up resources to safely stop the vehicle.
‘‘The vehicle was successfully and safely stopped using a tyre deflation device known as spikes on State Highway 1 in the Waitati area,’’ Snr Sgt Notman said.
Four teenagers were taken into custody as a result.
The driver, a 14-year-old was arrested and charged with unlawfully taking the motor vehicle and he received multiple theft charges relating to the petrol drive-offs.
He was bailed into Oranga Tamariki custody and would appear in Dunedin Youth Court at a later date.
The other three would be followed up with by Youth Aid.
Anyone who may have CCTV or dashcam footage from this incident can contact police.
