It has the winning formula.
The annual Green Island seven-a-side tournament has been a success since it started nearly 40 years ago.
At Sunnyvale tomorrow, there will be 121 teams and about 1200 players from the ages of 6 to 13 competing, with an additional 1000 parents and grandparents watching.
''It remains a tournament for kids and for kids to enjoy,'' tournament organiser Richard Johnston told the Otago Daily Times.
''Everyone will get at least three games and we have steps in place to make sure the semifinals flow on quickly after the group stages are completed.''
The tournament starts at 9am and is over at 4pm. There are teams coming from Gore, Milton and Balclutha as well as Dunedin. Nineteen games will be played at any one time.
The tournament is open for boys and girls. Some teams are mixed while others contain only boys or girls.
Last year, the tournament was postponed twice because of the weather and was eventually held in September. The forecast suggests rain is likely tomorrow afternoon.
There was a record number of 140 teams last year but the numbers have been reduced this year because of the late start to the Dunedin junior football season.
