Football: Lively showing expected from southern side

Otago versus Canterbury is now known as Footballsouth against Mainland Pride, but the same old rivalry will exist today at the University Oval in a national women's league match.

The loss of the injured Sam Muirhead will not help the home team's chances, but that is offset by the return of Georgia Brown.

Footballsouth was beaten 4-2 by Central last weekend but coach Nick Rzepecky said it was "not all doom and gloom".

"Footballsouth made the coaching staff proud by the way they battled back from a slow start."

Rzepecky said Mary Fraser scored the goal of the game with a "blistering low shot from the left-hand side of the 18-yard box, under their keeper and into the bottom right-hand corner.

"Una Madden's penalty goal required cool nerve from her after a retake was ordered by the ref."

Today, the Footballsouth women are eager to play in front of their home crowd for the first time this season.

"This squad has come together very well and they will not lie down for anyone," Rzepecky said.

"They will battle to the end of the game. All members of the squad know what needs to be done to win the game."

Mainland coach Mike de Bono is no stranger to Otago, and the Mainland coach and his side are on a high, after beating defending champion Capital 1-0 last week.
