Football: Seven of the best for Green Island

Footballsouth Premier League leader Green Island flattened bottom side Grants Braes 7-0 at Sunnyvale on Saturday.

Junior All Whites striker Joel Stevens and Nick Vinnicombe each scored twice, and Sean McIntee, Nathan Gunn and Taylor McCormack also found the net.

The win gives Green Island a three-point lead at the top of the FPL, but far more intimidating are the statistics that spell out the highest scoring rate - 18 in five games - and the miserly goals conceded column (two).

Green Island was only 1-0 ahead at the break, and a back problem sidelined Matt Mitchell. But the Island showed its depth by bringing on youngster Vinnicombe, who scored twice.

At the Caledonian Ground, Mosgiel quadrupled its points tally with a 2-0 win over Northern, which stayed competitive throughout the match.

Both sides attacked better than they defended, and the game was littered with half-chances that might have produced a cricket score.

Mosgiel's Regan Coldicott, Tim Dunn and Phil Kelly always looked dangerous, but without regular centreback Tom Bekker and midfielder Kris Wheeler, the Plainsmen lacked some structure, although youngster Matt Kelly in central defence was always composed.

Northern's attack was led by Angus Milne and Zinny Khant, and their strong running tested Mosgiel. Northern coach Murray Devereux claimed there were more scoring chances, but once again, Mosgiel keeper Ant Mallen kept a clean sheet.

Mosgiel's breakthrough was late in the game when Morgan Day headed against Northern's left post, and the ball skewed across and into Northern's net. Kelly clinched the 2-0 result with an opportunist run and clinical shot.

The late Caledonian game featured Roslyn-Wakari and University in an explosive clash full of skill, pace and commitment. It was well handled by American referee Calvin Berg.

At one stage, there was a discussion as to whether the ball was soft, which would not have been surprising considering the tackling, and brought to mind the old adage of the ball being carried off on a stretcher at the final whistle.

University's Peter Rae opened the scoring after 14 minutes, and as coach Luiz Uehara said: ''There was a good blend of physicality mixed with good passing and goalmouth action.''

Roslyn coach Colin Thom appreciated the skills on both sides, but ''at 1-0 down at the break, we needed to get in their face, defend higher, and stop them building attacks''.

The Roslyn team obliged, and centreback Chris Fernando, on a foraging run forward, hit an excellent equaliser. Fraser Cameron, full of running, made it 2-1 to Roslyn on the hour mark.

Varsity's Jeremy Fong scored the goal of the match with a towering leap and booming header that evened the score with 25 minutes to go.

Both sides continued to make chances. Tom Connor and Varsity's Ifeanyi Unamadu battled for right-wing possession, defender James Watson missed nothing in the air, and Cameron and Damian Foster pressured the Varsity defence.

More reknowned for raw energy, Foster produced a classy finish when he lobbed the 85th-minute winner over keeper Jefferson Potrich, then burned his remaining energy on a blazing, jumping victory race towards a delighted Thom.

At Tonga Park, Caversham dropped another two points with its second consecutive draw, this time 2-2 with Dunedin Technical. Goals from Simon Ward and Wil Smith for Caversham were cancelled out by George Milne and Tim McLennan for Technical.

In Invercargill, two goals by Jack Bolland spearheaded Old Boys' 4-2 win over Queenstown, whose scorers were, almost inevitably, Carlos Herrman and Ramzi Toumi.
