Trevin Myers bent a free kick around the wall and into the opposite corner to ultimately end the Dunedin City Royals’ cup dream.

The Nelson Suburbs danger man scored past the Royals in the 22nd minute, the goal that took them to a 1-0 win over the Royals in their Chatham Cup round four clash at Logan Park on Saturday.

The game started at a red-hot pace, and while the Royals began with an attacking lineup, it was Nelson who started stronger.

They forced two good saves out of Royals keeper Alex Boomer in the first six minutes, before being unlucky to not have a penalty two minutes later.

Tom Milton’s goal-bound shot was blocked for the Royals, before Connor Neil found Will Turner on a fast break on 17 minutes, but it was called back for offside.

The Royals conceded the free kick on the edge of the box from which Myers would give Boomer no chance.

Turner was working tirelessly up front, harassing and closing down defenders and giving Marcello Riley a particularly hard time, dispossessing him twice and getting shots on goal both times.

Both teams continued to go close and the Royals had a chance to equalise in the last five minutes of the half when Brady Jacobs ran on from an onside position and was bearing down on goal, but shot straight at Nelson keeper Corey Wilson.

Nelson then went straight down the other end and attacked with Lennon Whewell’s strike hitting the post.

Right on halftime, the Royals attacked and Max Davidson ghosted in at the near post and he nearly squeezed in an equaliser.

The Royals started the second half strongly, but were unable to gain any headway as Nelson strangled the midfield and goal-scoring opportunities diminished.

Wānaka were also knocked out of the Chatham Cup as they suffered a 3-0 loss to Christchurch United.

Shogo Osawa scored twice and Joel Stevens finished a penalty in a devastating nine-minute period.

In the Women’s Southern Premier League, Green Island beat Queens Park 3-0, and Otago University and Roslyn-Wakari played out a 0-0 draw.
