Southern United just had to be patient.
They held all the possession early in their National League game against Central, but just could not find the finish until Amy Hislop won a free kick.
She sent it flying into the box and Central goalkeeper Alex Gray jumped high to swat it away.
But Southern’s Georgia Keen headed home the rebound to get the home side on the board in the 17th minute.
It opened the onslaught that lead to a clinical 7-0 win at Logan Park yesterday.
They did all the damage in the first half and kept their home crowd entertained with some great football.
Georgia Nixon scored less than a minute after Keen’s first.
Hislop’s corner connected perfectly with Nieve Collin who headed it home and made it 3-0 to Southern inside 26 minutes.
Less than one minute later, Southern goalkeeper Lauren Paterson started something special.
She punted the ball long down the right flank for Nixon to get on the end of.
Nixon’s cross was finished by Hislop in a brilliant team goal.
Collin added another to her tally and Emma Vane buried a stunning individual effort in the 37th minute.
That made it 6-0 to Southern — but the home side were not done yet.
Keen’s second ducked underneath Gray and gave Southern a comfortable 7-0 lead at halftime.
Central replacement keeper Chloe McGregor made a great save early in the second half.
Central’s defence tightened in the second half, with several Southern chances being stopped.
But they never really threatened at the other end of the field.
Southern, who made several changes in the second half, could not get the last pass in the final third to stick and the radar was off.
They had several opportunities — Hislop’s best hit the left post — but just could not find the back of the net.
In the other games, Wellington United pumped Petone 7-0 on Friday.
Yesterday, Eastern Suburbs beat Wellington Phoenix 6-1, West Coast Rangers beat Canterbury United Pride 5-0 and Auckland United netted twice in the second half to beat Western Springs 2-0.
