Elite Queenstown course Jack’s Point remains the leading place to play golf in the South Island.

That is the determination of the annual New Zealand Golf Rankings, the latest version of which released this week.

Jack’s Point is again ranked fourth on the list.

There is also a familiar look about the top three courses in the rankings.

Exclusive Mangawhai course Tara Iti stays at No 1, Te Arai Links South remains No 2, and Te Arai Links North is still at No 3.

“While access remains highly exclusive, those fortunate enough to have played it understand why,’’ rankings co-ordinator and NZPGA professional Andrew Whiley, of Dunedin, said.

“The combination of world-class design, spectacular coastal scenery, and a course that sits naturally within the landscape creates an unforgettable golfing experience.”

Whiley said the rating of the two Te Arai courses confirmed that stretch of Northland coastline as one of the world’s premier golf destinations.

“Together, they now rival iconic golf regions such as Pebble Beach, Bandon Dunes and Melbourne’s famous Sandbelt.

“The combination of outstanding golf, luxury accommodation, quality dining and breathtaking scenery has made Te Arai a must-play destination for golfers from around the globe.

“The success of these courses is no surprise given the calibre of their architects. Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw designed Te Arai South Links, while Tom Doak was responsible for Te Arai North Links and Tara Iti, creating layouts that work in harmony with their natural surroundings.”

Other southern courses have experienced mixed fortunes on the ranking list.

The Hills, preparing for significant development, drops two places to eighth.

Millbrook’s Coronet layout stays 11th but the Remarkables drops one to 13th.

Arrowtown is 20th (up one), Otago 29th (down five), Queenstown 31st (down five), Cromwell 34th (down five), Chisholm Links 35th (down one) and Wānaka 40th (no change).

Cape Kidnappers (fifth), Wairakei Golf + Sanctuary (sixth), Paraparaumu Beach (seventh), Kinloch (ninth) and Kauri Cliffs (10th) were the other courses in the top 10.

Just half a point separated the courses ranked third through 10th.

Rankings were based on voting from a 25-strong panel that included PGA professionals, accomplished amateur golfers, course superintendents, golf industry professionals, and experienced club golfers from throughout New Zealand.

Courses were assessed across risk and reward, playability, layout, design, scenic values, conditioning, and ambience.

The rankings have been conducted every two years since 2012.
