Hockey: Storm overpowered by Auckland in NHL

The Southern Storm was beaten 4-0 by Auckland in the National Hockey League in Christchurch yesterday.

The side, which has yet to win at the tournament in Christchurch, struggled against an Auckland team which was seeking to score to aid its goal balance in a tight fight to make the semifinals.

Auckland, which led 3-0 at half-time, was powered by Black Sticks forwards Krystal Forgesson and Katie Glynn, who were constantly dangerous in front of goal.

Storm coach Mark Smithells said the side had worked hard at times during the match, but the Aucklanders showed tremendous skill in moving the ball around.

Southern youngster Kate Kernaghan was concussed after a collision with an Auckland player but has suffered no serious injury, and should continue to play in the tournament.

Left half Hannah Newman, a guest player from Auckland, played well for the Southern team, while young goalkeeper Liz Gifford put in a decent effort, despite conceding four goals.

The Southern men had a game last night against Midlands.

The teams have a day off today before the women's side plays Northland in its final round-robin match tomorrow.

The men will play Central tomorrow. Final games will be played on Sunday.
