Performance better than results suggest

Both Southern teams finished the national under-21 tournament in Auckland in disappointing fashion.

The men suffered a 3-0 loss to Canterbury on Saturday that consigned the team to last place. The final placing does not do justice to Southern's tournament, though.

While it did not manage to secure a win during regulation time, it was competitive throughout the week with three of its six games going to shootouts.

Goalie Dom Dixon was a standout performer for Southern, helping the team win two of those shootouts.

North Harbour had a bye on the last day of competition but had already wrapped up the title with five wins from six games.

The Southern women did manage to get a win. They beat Capital 1-0 on Friday but lost to Central 2-0 on Saturday.

They avoided last place but really struggled to score goals during the tournament. They managed just the one goal while conceding 21.

The women's tournament was won by Midlands and Canterbury was just a point behind in second place.
