Coach Ivan Cleary has wielded the axe as the New Zealand Warriors try to turn around their winless start to the National Rugby League season.

The Warriors' side named today to face Cronulla in Taupo on Sunday features six changes in personnel in the starting 13, with only one of them forced by injury.

Centre Jerome Ropati was yesterday confirmed as missing the rest of the season with a knee injury received against premiers St George Illawarra on Sunday.

Dropped from the line-up that started the 25-12 defeat to the Dragons are fullback Lance Hohaia, winger Kevin Locke, centre Joel Moon, halfback Brett Seymour and prop Sam Rapira.

Locke and Rapira have been retained on a five-man bench, but Hohaia, Moon and Seymour have been left out of the squad altogether.

The Warriors are one of just two clubs yet to win a match after three rounds and Cleary had indicated after the loss to the Dragons that changes were on the cards.

Mannering said the players were disappointed with how they had begun the season and they had been made aware that they had to perform to hold on to their spots.

"We've got depth in our squad and there's plenty of competition for positions," he said.

"There's a long way to go this season but those of us who have been given the opportunity against Cronulla this week know we have to come up with a much-improved effort."

Ropati's injury means Mannering moves from his usual position of second row to the centres, where he has played for both club and country, while Ukuma Ta'ai comes into the forwards.

On the other edge, Shaun Berrigan and Bill Tupou will form a new partnership replacing Moon and Locke.

Berrigan was the starting hooker against the Dragons and his move to centre means Aaron Heremaia returns to the run-on side.

There is a new halves pairing of James Maloney at halfback and Feleti Mateo at five-eighth, a position Mateo has played as Tonga skipper and for Parramatta.

Glen Fisiiahi, who was injured in his NRL debut in round one when he operated on the wing against Parramatta, goes to fullback.

In the front row, Rapira is replaced by Jacob Lillyman, who came off the bench against the Dragons.

On the bench, utility Elijah Taylor is in line for his first-grade debut after having been 18th man last week.
