League: Premiers score last-minute try to down Kia Toa Tigers

A combined Premiers side beat the Kia Toa Tigers 36-34 at the Oval on Saturday thanks to a last-minute try to prop Ronnie Tauarii.

Tauarii crashed over near the posts on fulltime to give the Premiers an eight-tries-to-six victory, after they had trailed 34-16 midway through the second half.

Both teams contributed to an entertaining encounter in which the lead changed throughout.

The Tigers got on the board early with a second-minute try to winger Mathew Graft before the Premiers hit back with a try to prop Ben Dickson.

The Tigers replied with an end-to-end try when second-rower Shane Unahi broke out from his own 20m mark and ran down the sideline.

Lock Karlos Harrington eventually scored by the posts to give the Tigers a 10-4 lead.

The Premiers responded with tries to fullback Grant Milne, prop Rocky Pohatu and hooker Simon Fuatavi to give them a 16-10 lead at halftime.

The Tigers scored four quick second-half tries to halfback Joel Taniora (2), second-rower Dallas Wade and winger Tere Moeroa to take a 34-16 lead with 20 minutes to play.

But the Premiers finished strongly and tries to prop Ron Muliau, winger Jamahl McClutchie and lock Manu Matapo got them within two points of the Tigers before Tauarii scored the match-winner.

Players to stand out for the Tigers were captain Taniora and second-rower Pita Davis.

For the Premiers, the halves combination of halfback James Stevenson-Wright and stand-off Ray Leoni showed some fine touches throughout the match, while Milne showed good pace and was a strong runner from the back. The pick of the Premiers forwards were Fuatavi and Muliau who hit the line hard all day.

The South Pacific Raiders will take on the Kia Toa Tigers in next week's final.
