Duncan back on track with world’s best

Courtney Duncan’s long wait will end this weekend.

The 20 year old will be back doing what she does best and that is  leaving the world’s best riders in her dust.

The rookie stunned the motocross community when she won three of her first four races at the women’s motocross world championship.

The Palmerston flier was on course to record another wonderful victory in the first race of the German round when she collided with a photographer who had strayed on to the edge of the track.

The accident brought Duncan’s championship prospects to a sudden halt and she needed corrective surgery on her left hand.

That was three months ago and she has been counting down the hours until she could get back on her Yamaha and resume racing in the tournament she was leading.

That wait ends in Switzerland this weekend and, while her championship prospects are long gone, she certainly has a point to prove.

Duncan could not be reached for comment but her mother, Linda Duncan, said her daughter was "so excited" to return to doing what she loves.

"She is just keen to get on that bike and race," Linda said.

Poor weather in Switzerland has hampered Duncan’s preparation but she has been able to practise on the track.

"She has had a few rides and can still feel her thumb but that is understandable. It is bearable and you know what she is like, she is just keen to get back on her bike."

Duncan is certainly no stranger to pain. After crashing into the photographer, she picked her bike up and managed to finish the race in 12th place.

She also crashed during the first race at the Netherlands events but rode through pain to win the second race, so there is no questioning her fortitude.

Racing gets under way in the early hours of tomorrow  morning (NZ time) and the second race is in the evening.

Linda said her daughter had put the collision with the photographer behind her.

"She doesn’t hold any grudges and will just be out there and focused on proving a point, I’d say.

"She has kept her fitness up ... and she’ll be pretty sweet. I just hope it all goes to plan."

Linda cannot bear to watch the event live but does view the replay.

"To tell the honest truth I watch the replay. I poke my head in just to get the thumbs up type of thing but it is just too much for me. I certainly enjoy watching the replay when it is all over."
