Steel captain Wendy Frew faces a long stint on the sidelines but her coach says if anyone can get back on the court it is the feisty Southlander.

Frew (32), who had just been named among the Silver Ferns triallists, ruptured the Achilles tendon in her left leg during the Super Club final in Nelson on Friday night.

Frew could not be contacted yesterday but Steel coach Reinga Bloxham said it was pretty obvious quite quickly after it had happened the injury to her skipper was serious.

``It was just before halftime and she went to take off and she just fell over. She turned around as she felt someone had kicked her in the leg,'' Bloxham said.

Frew was in pain and Bloxham said her team-mates were concerned.

The side, though, still had a game to win and Frew wanted her team-mates to focus on the game.

``We are devastated for her. She had worked extremely hard all season and she was really looking forward to getting a Silver Ferns trial. We were just feeling gutted for her.''

The players managed to get their minds back on the court and beat the Mystics 79-58 thanks to a strong third quarter.

Frew visited medical staff at Invercargill Hospital on Saturday and is seeking more advice over the next few days before any decision is made.

Whatever is done, Frew faces a long stint of the sideline.

It takes months to recover from the injury she has experienced although Bloxham said Frew was the sort of person who could get back.

``I think it comes down to the desire that the person has.

``But she just has to take her time and, first of all, has to get her health back, back to being a mother.''

Frew had a stint in hospital after a motorvehicle accident in Christchurch on June 12 but came back to play in the grand final on June 28.

Dunedin opened with a 55-27 win over Hawkes Bay and then beat Pukekohe 43-22 on the opening day of the under-19 national championships in Wellington yesterday.

North Otago lost 57-23 to Waitakere and 35-30 to Harbourside.
