Markham's College won both its final round-robin games on Saturday to top the premier A competition and book a semifinal against St Hilda's Collegiate A.

Southern Magpies will play Phys Ed A in the other semifinal but will take some patchy form into the match.

The Magpies rebounded from their midweek loss to St Hilda's Collegiate A with a 70-41 win against Phys Ed Blue on Saturday morning.

The final margin was a little deceptive, though, as the score only really blew out in the second half.

Phys Ed Blue matched the Magpies in the opening quarter.

Defender Cecily Reed was dynamic early on and really put pressure on Southern's shooters Maddy Hunt (16 from 21) and Eden Millan (12 from 16).

Centre Kate Thompson was linking beautifully with goal attack Lucy Kingsbury (three from six), and shooter Fiona Watson (34 from 47) made a strong start.

Southern had a one-goal advantage at the break but brought on Steel shooter Jennifer O'Connell (42 from 54) and she made a big difference.

The towering goal shoot's presence in the circle gave Southern an easy target, and the midcourt pairing of Zoey Flockton and Sophie Erwood were able to find their shooters with ease.

Southern moved into top gear, scoring 19 goals to take a 30-20 lead into halftime.

Phys Ed Blue was not able to match Southern's scoring capacity and its effort fell away alarmingly in the final quarter, with Southern outscoring its opponent 25-9.

Southern defender Beth Robertson is undersized for a goal keep but must have springs hiding in her heels. She used her wonderful vertical leap to grab perhaps half a dozen intercepts during the match.

Phys Ed A exacted revenge for the club in the afternoon, beating Southern 53-46 in a dress rehearsal for the semifinal.

Giant killer St Hilda's came unstuck in both matches, losing 60-42 to Markham's College and 63-56 to Uni Albion A.

South Pacific Titans had a good day, beating Uni Albion A 62-61 in the morning and Phys Ed B 60-45 in the afternoon.

Markham's College edged Phys Ed Blue 44-43 in its second game and Phys Ed A dealt to Phys Ed B 69-48 earlier in the week.
