'Grievous' assault leaves blood, belongings scattered on George St

A person was taken to hospital in a serious condition following an assault on George St shortly after midnight this morning.

A police spokesman said they were first called to the "grievous assault" on George St at about 12.30am. 

One person suffered serious injuries and was taken to Dunedin Hospital. 

Police arrested a 24 year-old man who appeared in Dunedin District Court this morning, charged with wounding with reckless disregard, which has a maximum penalty of seven years imprisonment.

The man was remanded in custody and granted interim name suppression.

He is due to appear in court again next month.

The scene remained cordoned off this morning with personal items and pools of blood lying in the street.

More than a dozen shops were behind the police tape.
