Netball: Broughton against need for bye round

Steel coach Robyn Broughton is not convinced the ANZ Championship needs a bye round.

The experienced coach told the Otago Daily Times she was not a fan of taking a week off during a tournament and, to illustrate her point, she scheduled a full week of training during her side's so-called bye.

"I'm not sure whether there should be a bye in these sorts of competitions," Broughton said.

"Once you start you should just keep playing.

"I think they [the players] should be fit enough.

"We actually trained hard and had our normal fitness sessions and normal practice sessions. We also played the Otago men in a full match."

The bye had not exactly come at an ideal time for the Steel.

It is still relatively early in the tournament and the franchise had just suffered its worst defeat - a 48-31 drubbing by the Vixens in Melbourne.

It was a morale-denting loss and the sort of defeat a team wants to bounce back from as soon as possible.

Instead, the Steel has to wait until Monday, more than two weeks since its loss to the Vixens, for a shot at redemption.

"It was a big loss to the Vixens and you have to mentally get on top of things again after a loss like that.

"Mind you, they're an excellent side and they are right on top of their game."

While the Vixens were superb, Broughton felt her side started slowly and struggled to peg back its opponent.

"We didn't play well enough and we didn't play up to our standards. They got ahead and we tried to play them at their game and could not keep up with them."

The break has proved timely for experienced goal keep Megan Hutton, though.

She has recovered from her Achilles injury and will be available for selection.

That is likely to cause a reshuffle at the back.

Broughton has plenty of options with Silver Ferns Katrina Grant and Sheryl Scanlan and national squad member Erika Burgess all capable of playing in the defence circle.

Arguably, the strongest line-up would be Hutton at goal keep with Grant moving to goal defence and Scanlan to wing defence.

Although Broughton said she was still undecided who would start against Mystics on Monday,The game is shaping up as a crucial match for both sides.

The Mystics are in eighth place with two wins from five games and the Steel in seventh with two wins from four games.

The Mystics have proved a bogey team for the Steel, winning both encounters last season including ending the Steel's semifinal hopes when they beat it 47-41 in Auckland.

"They've got lots of wily players with people like Vili [Vilimaina Davu], and Jade [Topia] did a good job for them when she came on."

It is also an opportunity for Debbie White and Scanlan to get one over on their old team-mates.

The pair switched sides this season.
