Fantastic defence and some superb shooting helped the Steel seal a 55-53 win against the Canterbury Tactix in Christchurch last night.

Goal keep Demelza McCloud is fast endearing herself to the folk in the deep South and produced another strong performance.

The lanky Australian nabbed her share of turnovers and carried the defensive effort.

But the winning of the game was down the other end, with Jodi Brown enjoying a top game.

The former Silver Ferns shooter had an off game against the Pulse last week but rebounded with a classy outing, dropping in some nerve-tingling shots from the edge of the circle.

The experienced campaigner has been starting at goal attack but switched with Donna Wilkins and landed 31 of her 36 attempts.

Wilkins was also accurate with 24 from 27 but Brown stole the show.

The 30-year-old mother of two started the match with a dud pass and a fumble but quickly got into her work, landing a monster shot from deep.

However, the captain was not completely satisfied with the Steel's performance.

"When we get a lead we need to keep building on it," she told Sky television.

"We kept letting the Tactix come back ... so we need to make sure when we get that lead we can sustain it and move on."

Brown was not happy with some of the ball movement through court, either.

"There is some big gaps in our play but we'll address that."

The Steel stuck with the same starting seven which took the court in the loss to the Pulse, although Brown and Wilkins switched bibs.

England international Jo Harten opened the scoring in a confident start from the home side.

Brown made a couple of early errors but found her range with a nice long shot to help steady the nerves.

At the break both sides were level on 15 apiece. The Steel had missed just one attempt at goal but made seven turnovers.

Brown and Wilkins started the quarter with a rare miss but Courtney Tairi helped keep the damage to a minimum with an intercept.

Neither side was able to gain any significant advantage, with both teams missing out on opportunities to convert turnovers.

Tactix defender Joanna Trip stumbled with 4min remaining in the half which forced coach Leigh Gibbs to shuffle her defence. Anna Galvan shifted from wing defence to goal defence, Maree Bowden dropped back from centre to wing defence and Kiley Hikawai came on at centre.

The Steel defence was more effective in the second period with McCloud robbing the Tactix with a couple of intercepts to help the visitors take a 28-26 led into halftime.

Gibbs opted for more height in the shooting circle, bringing Ellen Halpenny on at goal shoot.

Harten and Anna Thompson fell back one position and wing attack Keshia Grant dropped to the bench.

The combination took five minutes to turn a two-goal deficit into a three-goal lead.

Defender Sheryl Scanlan was struggling to make an impact and when McCloud called a time out to get some medical treatment, the Steel's coaching staff seized the opportunity to inject the taller and younger Storm Purvis into the game.

The Tactix was winning the battle in the midcourt and cut the gap to one, outscoring the Steel 15-14.

Gibbs rang in the changes for the fourth quarter and in hindsight it probably cost the Tactix.

The Steel had more fluency when it counted most and midway through the final period had outscored the Tactix seven goals to two to build a six-goal lead.

The home side mounted a brave comeback but had left its run too late.

Bowden never stopped running for the Tactix and Harten had a solid game in the shooting circle with 32 from 38.

In other matches, the Queensland Firebirds thrashed the Central Pulse 58-32 in Brisbane and the Melbourne Vixens beat the Adelaide Thunderbirds 48-34 in Adelaide.
