Netball: Comfortable win for Southern

There were no surprises in the Dunedin premier club competition at the weekend, with all the favoured teams recording comfortable wins.

In the opening match, Southern A outclassed College A 79-38.

From the outset, Southern never looked in doubt and gained an early ascendancy, with the shooting combination of Grier Campbell (goal attack) and Te Paea Selby-Rickit (goal shoot) proving too strong for College.

The sharp interchanges of passes between these two demonstrated their talents.

However, despite their ability to get the ball under the hoop, the pair were often guilty of failing to put the ball though it at first try.

Luckily, these tall shooters were able to sink the rebounds, sometimes on the third attempt.

Southern led 19-14 going into the first-quarter break.

Rihi Salter, who played as a shooter for Southern last year, has turned her skills to centre this year.

This transition appears to be taking a little time, as she often finds herself behind play but her feeding abilities support the young shooters and her calmness enables the attack line to settle before putting up the shot.

Southern had extended its lead to 37-21 by halftime.

With Salter moving to the bench at halftime, Hayley Saunders injected herself into the midcourt, her superior speed and agility surpassing that of the players around her.

In a match-defining quarter, Southern outscored College 26-5 to lead 63-26 at three-quarter time.

In the final quarter, College rallied slightly as Southern took the opportunity to ensure all players got a run on court.

In other matches, Phys Ed Phedex secured vital points, beating Southern B 57-40, and University-Albion A rounded out the day with a healthy 62-41 win over Phys Ed A.
