Hopes of the playoffs are long gone but the Steel can still salvage something from the season - a first win across the Ditch.
The Steel travels to Sydney to play the Swifts tomorrow, with the side still getting over the heartbreak loss to the Tactix in Invercargill on Monday night.
The home side was ahead for much of the game only to be beaten 62-61, conceding the final goal in the last 10 seconds of the match.
Steel co-coach Natalie Avellino said naturally the side was very disappointed to lose to the Tactix but simply had to bounce back quickly.
That started with playing a complete game, and chalking up a breakthrough win over the Tasman.
Twelve times the Steel has tried to win in Australia and every time it has come away unsuccessful.
Having racked up eight losses in a row in the competition this year, the Steel is focused on ending its barren run in Australia.
"This is the perfect opportunity to do it," Avellino said.
"That is a big goal of ours. We are not scared about going into this game, and we want to play a really positive game.
"We've only had one chance this year so far and we've not had a great record over there but there is nothing like the present to get a win."
The Steel had not trained together as a team this week, with players working out in Dunedin and Invercargill.
The team had a short turnaround this week, and flew out to Sydney yesterday morning.
Recalled veteran Adine Wilson did not travel with the team and Sheryl Scanlan has remained in Invercargill as she continues to be hampered by a calf injury.
The Steel will take just 11 players to the game. Replacement defender Stephanie Bond has also not made the trip.
Avellino said midcourter Shannon Francois got through three quarters against the Tactix and reported no major issues with her damaged ankle.
That was about the only positive which came out of the loss to the Tactix, which Avellino said was hard to stomach.
"There were just things we were doing in the first half that we stopped doing in the second half.
"In the first half of the season we were struggling to get back into the match, after starting off slowly. Now, in the past few games we are not being able to hold on to a lead."
Avellino was not buying the line about a lack of experience causing the wheels to fall off at vital times.
"When you look at times in the game against the Tactix we had five players on the court with a lot of experience."
She admitted there was huge disappointment among the team after the loss, but the side simply had to get over it and move on.
The Swifts sit just outside the top four after being hammered by the Thunderbirds 62-35 in Sydney last Sunday.
The Australian side will have gone back to the drawing board after that thrashing - which was its biggest defeat in the competition - and will be looking to make a quick start against the Steel.
The Steel needs to maintain composure in the opening minutes and move the ball quickly through court to create doubt in the Swifts' mind.
The Steel will finish its season with a game against the Vixens in Invercargill next Saturday.
