Adine Wilson's comeback reached a new level yesterday when she was named captain of the Southern Steel.
The former Silver Ferns captain, who took a break from the sport to start a family following the world championships in 2007, will lead the team in its ANZ Championship campaign with Wendy Telfer deputising.
Focused on returning to the sport she loves, the wing attack was not expecting the captaincy but plans to embrace the role.
"It is a real honour that Rob [Robyn Broughton] asked me and it's a pretty special team," she said. "We are wanting to achieve big things this year so it will be nice to lead that."
She was thrilled to see Telfer awarded the vice-captaincy.
"Wendy has so much to give in the leadership role and it's great to see her get that opportunity. All of the girls have so much respect for her and that's so important in a leadership position."
Broughton said Wilson brought plenty of experience to the role, while Telfer had also excelled when given more responsibility in recent years.
"They also have a lot of people around them that will be of great benefit - the likes of Donna [Wilkins] and Sheryl [Scanlan]," Broughton said.
The Steel will test its mettle at a three-day pre-season tournament in Queenstown this weekend (February 20-22) which also features the defending champions New South Wales Swifts, Northern Mystics, Central Pulse and the Australian Institute of Sport team.
