At the moment, it would seem the race is for which side will play the Central Pulse in the final.

The defending champion has zoomed out to an early lead in the ANZ Premiership.

Just shy of the competition’s halfway mark, the Pulse holds a seven-point lead on the table.

It is unbeaten after six games — one fewer than all but the Northern Mystics have played — and has been dominant in most.

Only the Southern Steel has prised a bonus point off it — a 40-37 result in an even game on Friday night.

The Pulse has shown its dominance at both ends.

Its shooters combine volume with exceptional accuracy, while its defensive unit is tough to penetrate.

Just two points separate the next three teams in the fight for second.

A straight final this year makes that battle all the more important.

The Mystics lead the chase on 17 points and have a game in hand over the Northern Stars (16 points) and Mainland Tactix (15 points).

However, the Mystics have a tough double-header against the Stars and Pulse on Friday and Saturday.

Following that bunch is the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic on nine points, while the Southern Steel finds itself in the unfamiliar last spot on six.

The majority of teams have eight games remaining, giving plenty of time to catch up, while the Pulse and Mystics have nine.
