Central Otago finalists named

Thirty-one finalists in six categories have been announced for the Central Otago sports awards.

Awards co-ordinator Bill Godsall said many of the finalists had been nominated for the first time, and a wide range of sports was represented.

''It just shows how our Central Otago sportspeople are punching above their weight in many sports throughout the region. And some of them don't necessarily make the headlines, but they're still achieving some amazing results.''

The awards will be held in Queenstown on April 28.

The finalists are.-

Junior men: Sam Robbie, (for mountain biking, of Queenstown), Finn Bilous (free-skiing, Wanaka), Benjamin Hartford (ice hockey, Queenstown), Hamish McLean (swimming, Wanaka), Thomas Hartono (tennis, Queenstown), Jack Leslie (natural luge, Naseby).

Junior women: Alice Robinson (ski-racing, Queenstown), Morgan Potter (karate, Alexandra), Phoebe Young (mountain biking, road cycling and triathlon, Wanaka), Nicole Shields (track/road cycling, Alexandra), Sammy Burke (athletics, Wanaka), Sophie Woodham (athletics, Queenstown).

Senior men: Jossi Wells (free-skiing, Wanaka), Sam Lee (free-skiing, Wanaka), Finn Butcher (slalom kayaking, Alexandra), Richie Hadlow (boxing Queenstown).

Senior women: Kate Fluker (mountain biking, Queenstown), Marilyn Bunce (petanque, Alexandra), Jamie Hume (netball, Clyde), Nicky Samuels (triathlon, Wanaka), Simone Maier (multisport/adventure racing, Wanaka), Alanna Columb (mountain biking, Queenstown).

Team: Dunstan High School netball A team (Alexandra), Dunstan High School women's novice rowing team (Alexandra), Queenstown Rovers female senior football team (Queenstown), Sky City Southern Stampede ice hockey team (Queenstown), Macaela Turfus and Sydney Cook (Dunstan Arm Rowing, Alexandra).

Coach: Sean Thompson (snowboarding, Queenstown), Gavin Key (mountain biking, Wanaka), Val Burke (multisport, Wanaka), Simon Smith (rowing and cycling, Alexandra).
