Curling: Bronze for NZ senior men

Dunedin curler Dan Mustapic has helped the New Zealand men's team win a bronze medal at the world senior championships in Russia.

The New Zealanders beat Denmark 6-4 in the third-fourth playoff at the event, which followed the world mixed doubles championships in Sochi.

Mustapic made the key play in the seventh end, taking out three Danish stones.

New Zealand had scored three points in the sixth to take control of the game.

Mustapic was joined by skip Hans Frauenlob, Lorne De Pape, Ian Craig and Dave Watt (alternate) in the team, which missed out on the final with a 9-4 loss to the United States in the semifinal.

The New Zealanders beat Switzerland 5-4 after an extra end in the quarterfinal.

''It's fantastic to come away from a world championship with a medal,'' Frauenlob said.

''We're obviously disappointed to lose the semi this morning but I was really pleased with how the guys came back this afternoon.

''The week in Sochi has been amazing. We didn't know what to expect but the facilities have been amazing, the organisation has been fantastic, and the hospitality has been brilliant. We've had a great time here.''

The United States beat Canada 9-4 in the men's final.

Canada won a 10th title by beating Italy 6-2 in the women's final.

The New Zealand women, including Ranfurly curler Wendy Becker, finished 10th. They beat Italy and Slovakia in pool play.

Mustapic and fellow Dunedin curler Marisa Jones finished 20th at the world mixed doubles championships.

Karlstad, in Sweden, will host both events next year.
