Gordon, a former policeman, replaces Mitch McRae, who has held the job since 2014.
McRae has moved back to his home town of Oamaru to become Sport Waitaki co-ordinator.
Gordon attended Milton Primary School and South Otago High School.
He played representative tennis in his early years, and refereed rugby for more than a decade in South Otago, Canterbury, and Horowhenua.
He moved to Canterbury where became actively involved in multisport and competed in Coast to Coast events.
Joining the police in 2007 coincided with a move to Levin where he coached multisport, adventure racing, and played and coached basketball.
Gordon (39) returned to Balclutha in 2012 and was involved in getting basketball back up and running locally, to the point where South Otago now has a representative team. He played, coached and was also involved in the administration of the sport.
He also helped re-establish the Waihola cricket team in the South Otago competition. He has worked with Sport Clutha in the past and enjoys being involved in sport in any capacity. He is looking forward to the role.
"I’m excited about the role and the positive outcomes that come with it. I’m passionate about sport in our community and I see the role as a crucial link for providing opportunities in getting people active," he said.
