New Zealand pair book world champs

New Zealand pair Courtney Smith and Anton Hood got their revenge at the right time.

The Otago curlers beat Finland 6-5 in an intense extra end to claim the fourth qualification spot for the world mixed doubles championships in Oestersund, Sweden yesterday.

Competing at the qualifying tournament in Scotland against 26 other teams, Smith and Hood had lost to Finland earlier in the week.

In that match they were tied 6-6 at the final end, before the Finns scored the winner.

But the New Zealand pair came back when it mattered to secure their world championship spot in April next year.

Earlier in the week, they thumped Brazil 10-2 and followed up with an 8-6 win over Lithuania, and also beat Belgium 9-3 and Hong Kong 10-6.
