South Otago dairy farmer Bruce Park put a painful back injury behind him when he broke four New Zealand powerlifting records recently.

Park (74) broke New Zealand masters over-70 records in the 66kg class at the South Island championships in Invercargill.

He lifted 130kg in the squat, 80kg in the bench press, 187.5kg in the deadlift and had a record total of 397.5kg.

Park got a new lease of life when he started powerlifting at the New Zealand Masters Games four years ago.

But he suffered a setback two years ago when he slipped a disc in his back and pinched the femoral nerve.

He lost the power in his legs that is essential for successful powerlifting.

Park was helped by his surgeon to slowly get back into the sport and he was rewarded for his patience.

"It feels good to be free of pain and to be able to lift weights freely again," Park said.

He has also reduced his weight by 6kg to compete in the 66kg class.

"I have exercised more on a rowing machine and cut down the amount of food I have been eating," Park said. "I eat more protein."

Park first gained a love of sport when he was a pupil at Macandrew Intermediate when the 1950 Empire Games were broadcast daily through the school loudspeaker system.

He became a talented athlete and represented Otago in throwing events and coached his daughter, Jeanette, to a New Zealand junior women's discus title.

In October, he will represent New Zealand at the world powerlifting championships in Killeen, Texas.

Park also represented New Zealand at the Oceania championships in Tahiti in 2008.

He finished fifth at the world bench press championships in Taupo two years ago.

Marie Soffe (51), a Dunedin credit analyst, broke three national records in the open women's 72kg class in the squat (125kg) and deadlift (170kg), and had a record total of 387.5kg.

Brent McCormack broke two national records in the men's open 93kg class with a squat of 310kg and total of 772.5kg.

Sylvia Clarkson, in the masters over-60 grade, equalled two of her own national records in the 63kg class in the squat (102.5kg) and deadlift (120kg).

There were also good performances from Special Olympians in the deadlift with Brett Sutherland and Dominic Crowe both lifting 162.5kg and Grant McKenzie 170kg.
