Many records were broken at the South Island powerlifting championships at the weekend.

Thirty-two lifters from around the South Island competed at the event at Dunedin's Crossfit Uncut.

''The weekend ended up being a massive success,'' event organiser Phil Murphy said.

''Everybody that came out had a good time.''

Bruce Park (77), a former deadlift world record-holder, broke South Island records in the squat (127.5kg), bench (77.5kg) and total weight lifted (377.5kg).

Park lifted in the 70-79 age-group, but he also broke the record in the 60-69 category.

Antonio Sieuli claimed provincial records for each of his lifts with a 230kg squat, 140kg bench, 240kg deadlift and 610kg total weight.

Otago and Southland weightlifters teamed together to make up the Southern weightlifting team, but could not manage to keep the provincial title in the South.

''Unfortunately, we lost the shield back up to Canterbury. But we were missing a lot of our top athletes at the world championships.''

Five lifters from the South have been competing at the world classic powerlifting championships in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Dunedin's Ashley Templeton (junior 63kg) won a silver and a bronze at the event.

She lifted 85kg in the bench, in which she received her individual silver, and took bronze in the overall category after lifting 355kg total.

Another Dunedin lifter, Sarah Simpson (junior 52kg), who has only been lifting for a year, finished fifth in her class with a 90kg squat, 67kg bench and 135kg deadlift, totalling 295kg.

Both women set New Zealand records in all their lifts.

The best of the Southlanders was Sonia Manaena (open 84kg-plus), who claimed bronze with her squat of 175kg. She broke world masters two records with her deadlift (230kg) and total (507.5kg).
