Southern stalwart Michael Reggett was last night named the Otago Rugby Volunteer of the Year at an awards function at Carisbrook.

Reggett is one of the hardest workers for Otago rugby and has made a major contribution to the sport as a member of the Otago Rugby Football Union Rugby Council since 2001.

He joined the metropolitan committee as well this year.

His specialty work on the council was as a liaison officer for visiting teams in the Super 14 competition and tests in Dunedin.

Reggett has been a member of the Southern club committee for more than 30 years and has been one of the best club captains in Otago rugby.

He has been a long-term manager of the Southern premier team in the Dunedin competition and has lifted the profile of the job. The Ray Byrne Memorial Trophy presented to Reggett honours a Green Island club stalwart.

The judging panel was Tuppy Diack, Fred Daniel and Bill Trevathan.
