Fast horses and rich prize money of more than $2million may not be most attractive thing for the industry at Ellerslie's Karaka Million meeting on Saturday.

Ministry staff indicated to the Otago Daily Times that Racing Minister Winston Peters was close to making announcements on the work he has done in the racing portfolio.

Peters could have as his stage New Zealand's richest race meeting or the national yearling sales, which start at Karaka on Monday, for making such a statement.

That could bring good news to the industry which has been left in crisis after a series of abandoned meetings this year, causing participants frustration and financial loss.

Industry speculation suggests Peters may announce a new racing policy statement.

The New Zealand First racing policy was supported by the Labour Party in the Government's coalition agreement.

The policy pledged to reform racing taxes, introduce a $15,000 stakes category, enhance employment and export opportunities, and boost the breeding industry, among other aims.

Te Akau filly Avantage remains favourite despite not gaining an advantage after the barrier draw for the Karaka Million.

Avantage will jump from barrier 5 in the listed $1million Ellerslie feature, two spots wider than her main rival, She's A Thief.

The speedy Mike Moroney and Pam Gerard-trained filly landed the perfect number 3 barrier that should enable her to speed straight to the lead.

Avantage held $3.60 favouritism ahead of She's A Thief with TAB bookmakers yesterday.

New Zealand 2000 Guineas winner Embellish was the loser following the draw for Saturday's Karaka 3yr-old Classic.

The Te Akau colt will be parked out in barrier 13, two spots inside 1000 Guineas winner Hasahalo.

One of the horses splitting that pair is Aussie raider Scream Park.

The Chris Waller trained 3yr-old has won two minor races at Warwick Farm and will be ridden by star Aussie jockey Hugh Bowman.

South Island hope Savvy Coup has drawn handily in barrier 3, inside her co-second favourite, Contessa Vanessa.
