Canterbury driver Samantha Ottley set a perfect tempo to help Southland mare I'mallaboutthebase win the Cromwell Cup.

The Steve Baucke-trained mare never looked in doubt, leading all the way to win the 2600m feature.

Ottley had the field spread over more than 20 lengths in the first lap as she perfectly judged the pace to suit her 5yr-old.

The reinswoman played down her masterly drive.

"The horsepower helps — she is a lovely little mare."

I'mallaboutthebase was having just her fourth standing start yesterday, which meant her camp did not expect her to begin so well and find the front early.

"Steve said she can be a little funny from the start," Ottley said.

"When she stepped so well and I got the top like that I thought I would bowl along a little bit early and make it hard for the others."

I'mallaboutthebase loved her work in front so much she had plenty in reserve to score by a length and a-half over runner-up Lawrence.

"She just loved it in front. When we went around down the back she saw one come outside her and she really grabbed the bit."

Southland trotter Andy Hall remained unbeaten when he produced a flashing finish to win race 3.

The Nathan Williamson-trained 4yr-old made it two wins from two starts with a stylish effort over 2600m in rating 40-55 company.

Andy Hall is a half-sister to Williamson’s good performer, Splash Cola, who is now trained by Regan Todd at Woodend Beach.

That breeding has played a part in how Williamson has progressed with the towering son of Andover Hall and Delcola.

"The breed is a pretty nice breed. They can run, so we have just concentrated on his manners.

"He has got the class now, but the ringcraft might take him a bit longer.

"All the rest of them have been able to run, but it has just been the manners that have been the problem at times."

Andy Hall is a half-brother to four-win northern trotter Delson and one-race winner Delestic.

The trotter’s size has also dictated how he has progressed to the races and why Williamson has not stepped him out until he was a 4yr-old.

"We had him in at 2 and 3yrs-old, but he was so big and immature.

"So I think anything he does when he gets older will be better."

Williamson plans to space the gelding’s races and will target a graduation final at the end of the month.

"He is such a big horse and he puts quite a bit into every run, so we will space his races."

Canterbury mare Nemera Franco showed she was back to her best when delivering her trademark late finish to win yesterday’s Cromwell Businesses Cup.

Trainer Steven McRae was wary about how the 5yr-old might perform after she failed to impress him in her work leading into race 9.

A pinpoint drive from Craig Thornley helped Nemera Franco unleash a late finish.
