Cameron George, the present chief stipendiary steward, has been appointed chief executive officer of the Auckland Racing Club.

The club announced the appointment yesterday. He takes up the position in mid-August.

George has been chief steward for the past two and a-half years. He was originally with New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing.

He had overseen the establishment of the Racing Integrity Unit 16 months ago with stewards officiating in dual codes.

George had a previous stint as chief steward for NZTR and served as chief steward in Victoria.

ARC chairman Russell Warwick said George's strong background in residential and commercial property would also be of enormous benefit to the growth of Ellerslie.

"The opportunities that exist across the business, within all of its facets, will provide exciting times," George said.

He was leaving the RIU in good shape.

"I have put my heart and soul into it [the RIU]. There are very good staff there. The aim was to develop stewards to enable promotion from within and I am confident the high calibre of policing will be carried on."
