Sushi Sushi is set to contest the Methven Cup next Sunday after a workout win there on Saturday.

"He seemed to pace good on the grass and pulled up well," Natalie Rasmussen, his driver, said.

Sushi Sushi started from 30m over 2400m and led home his stablemate, Fly Like An Eagle, who started from 20m.

Sushi Sushi, the former Australian pacer, now trained by Mark Purdon, missed a start at Addington on Friday night following treatment for a blood disorder.

He is 12th in the New Zealand Cup rankings.

The stable won the Methven Cup last year with Vi Et Animo, who gave Rasmussen her first New Zealand win when he overcame a 30m handicap. Purdon and Grant Payne had taken over the training of Vi Et Animo three weeks earlier.

The stable trotting star I Can Doosit made an auspicious return to racing when he overcame a 25m handicap to win the Banks Peninsula Trotting Cup at Motukarara yesterday.

I Can Doosit, who had not raced since early May, has now won 13 races in a row. He won by a head from Quality Invasion in 3.42.4, a 2.07.3 mile rate.

Sovereignty, who raced in the shadow of I Can Doosit last season, won a workout at Methven. Sovereignty, who has not raced since early April, is due to resume at Addington next Friday. He will be off 30m.

Sovereignty has been in the care of Greg and Nina Hope at Woodend Beach after being sent south by Cambridge trainer Sean McCaffrey a fortnight ago.

"He was off his game most of last season but seems good this time in," McCaffrey said from Argentina where he attended the All Blacks-Pumas game.

The race on Friday night is a prelude to a return clash with I Can Doosit in the Canterbury Park Trotting Cup on October 12.

Caribbean Blaster is on target for the New Zealand Trotting Cup after his win in the $20,000 The Gammalite at Melton on Friday night in a 2.00.2 mile rate for 2760m from a standing start.

Caribbean Blaster, who started from 10m, had not raced since he won the 4yr-old division of the Australasian Breeders' Crown at Melton on August 19.

Caribbean Blaster, who is 14th in the ranking for the 15-horse field in the Cup, is at $11 with the NZ TAB in futures betting.

Caribbean Blaster, who has his final lead up in the Kilmore Cup on October 28, has been driven in his 18 wins by Kate Gath, wife of the trainer, Andy Gath.

Terror To Love is a $3.20 favourite for the New Zealand Trotting Cup on November 13 after his fresh-up win at Addington on Friday night.

Robbie Close, the junior driver, drove Native's Brite Spark and Kamwood Blue Chip to win yesterday.

Kamwood Blue Cup is trained by Close's employer, Robbie Holmes. Native's Brite Spark is trained by part-owner Austin Thornton.

Trainer Jim Curtin told stewards yesterday that he suspected Franco Emirate might have been slightly foot sore when he finished eighth in the New Brighton Cup on Friday night. Curtin said he would explore shoeing options in an attempt to rectify the problem.

Armbro Demon overcame a punctured sulky tyre in the closing stages to win at Addington on Friday night in her first race for 10 months. Now trained by Phil Williamson, Armbro Demon took her record to six wins in nine starts.

She left stride briefly at the 300m when the tyre punctured but rallied to win by three-quarters of a length.

Trevor Ward, the amateur driver, was fined $400 for failing to show the necessary care when his horse, Little Joe, shifted in at the 100m, crowding Roxy Bromac in race four at Banks Peninsula yesterday. Little Joe was relegated from first to 10th.
