Racing: What's in a name

The North Taieri-trained 2yr-old Mum Beat Lyall qualified as a trotter at Motukarara yesterday.

Mum Beat Lyall is owned and trained by Martin Denton.

She is a filly by Earl from Sunny Action, who won the 2000 New Zealand Trotting Free-For-All at the expense of champion trotter Lyell Creek.

It ended a 20-race winning streak for Lyell Creek, who finished second, relegated to third.

Lyell Creek was unbeaten in NZ and Australia over the previous 21 months.

Sunny Action was owned and trained by Jim Dalgety and driven by Terry Chmiel.

She is the dam of Flaming Action, winner of three races, including a double at Alexandra Park this month.

Sunny Action has left five foals, one of whom died.

Mum Beat Lyall was a buy back for $20,000 by breeders Denton and Garry Clarke, of Tirohanga at the premier sale in February.

Mum Beat Lyall ran the 2200m (mobile) yesterday in 2.59.8, 1.9sec inside the required time.

Sir Clive won his heat yesterday in a smart 2.48.3, the last 800m in 56.6 but his trainer Michael House had concerns, our Christchurch Correspondent reports.

House took over the training of Sir Clive after the colt had surgery to remove bone chips from both front knees.

"I wasn't happy with him. He paced roughly on two occasions between the 400 and top of the straight and pulled a shoe. He stopped over the last bit," House said.

Trainer Nigel McGrath was satisfied with Anvils Best Ever, who ran well for fourth in a trial yesterday.

The 2yr-old was an impressive trial winner at Addington on November 26.

"That was just what I wanted him to do. A nice quiet run," McGrath said.

Anthony Butt has been engaged to drive Anvils Best Ever in a heat of the Young Guns series at Alexandra Park on December 31.

Anvils Best Ever will be accompanied to Auckland by the trotter King Charlie, winner of his last two starts.
