Somethings Burning broke a 19-month winning drought when securing the Waitaki River trophy at Oamaru yesterday.

The drought looked set to continue just 100m short of the post as the Steven Woodsford-trained galloper  had still not made the lead.

But unlike in his previous 14 starts the horse found a way to get his nose in front on the line.

During his drought, Somethings Burning had been ridden by some of New Zealand’s best riders.

But yesterday, Chris Johnson provided his magic touch to lift Somethings Burning to win.

The typically modest Johnson deflected any praise for his hand in the win and suggested Somethings Burning had not forgotten where the winning post was.

"He travelled really good all of the way and he looked like only running third 100m out, but he has been around a few times and knows where the post is."

Trainers John and Karen Parsons and their apprentice Gosen Jogoo starred at yesterday’s Oamaru meeting when scoring a winning treble.

Their first two wins came in contrasting circumstances.

The Parsons stable debuted 2yr-old winner Fire Show who produced a smart front-running win in race 3.

The Showcasing gelding looked smart with when leaving his rivals in his wake for Jogoo.

Jogoo used completely different tactics to win race 1 with Lin.

The mare is usually seen making the pace in her race, but that was not the case yesterday.

Running without blinkers for the first time in many starts helped Jogoo settle Lin off the speed.

She then produced a sustained finish to win.

The hot form of the Parsons and Jogoo combination continued when they won race 5 with Jane Averil.

Wingatui trainer Terry Kennedy scored a winning double at yesterday’s meeting.

He won race 6 with Bet Ya Wood and race 9 with Juliette.
