The New Zealand thoroughbred industry was hit with the abandonment of two race meetings over the weekend.
The Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting at Riccarton was abandoned after two races after horses slipped in each race.
"Several jockeys reported that their mounts had lost their footing in an area passing the 600m," the stewards’ report said.
An inspection of that part of the track was undertaken by club officials, trainer and jockey representatives, and stewards, and the track was deemed unsuitable for further racing. The eight races that were not run on Saturday have been rescheduled for Riccarton tomorrow.
The Te Awamutu meeting yesterday was also abandoned after just two races.
Several riders raised concerned about their horses’ footing on the corners. The meeting has not been rescheduled.
