All Blacks lock Luke Romano is returning home from Chicago following a family bereavement.

Assistant head coach Ian Foster told media, cover will come within the current squad in the United States.

Romano was expected to start against Ireland on Sunday with injuries to regular starting locks Sam Whitelock and Brodie Retallick.

Romano's departure leaves Patrick Tuipulotu is the only fit lock in the squad while Scott Barrett and Vaea Fifita were part of the squad as injury replacements.

Other options are Steven Luatua and Jerome Kaino who can move from the loose forwards into the tight five.
