Williams' holiday mode off

The holiday plans have been shelved as Sonny Bill Williams looks forward to getting back into the black jersey.

Williams (32) looks likely to come back into the All Black side for the third test against the French at Forsyth Barr Stadium.

It has been a swift return for a player who had been ruled out at the start of the month with a knee injury and was expected to miss four to six weeks after keyhole surgery on his knee.

Now, in less than three weeks, Williams is ready to get back on to the paddock.

He is a fast healer obviously but Williams said it all just occurred swiftly.

''I thought I would not be playing for four to six weeks. It all sort of happened quickly.

'' I was in holiday mode and just had a meeting with management staff and medical staff,'' he said.

''The doc said it was a success and said it was a lot better than expected.

''The coach turned to the doc and said ''is he a chance of playing in the third test or being available for selection?'''

''He [doctor] said yeah but he has to come into camp. So he said you're in camp.

''I rang my wife and she was a little bit upset as she had planned things. We were trying to go away for a couple of days with the girls. She was a little bit upset.''

Williams said the knee was fine and he was excited to get back into action.

''It is feeling really good. I had a pretty full-on session before the game last Saturday and that was pretty tough. I came though unscathed from that.

''Last week I just really enjoyed helping the boys get up for a test match. A lot of the times I have been in the driver's seat but it was really good to show my love for the boys and try and get them prepared as well as they could for a game.''

Experience helped in his recovery, he said.

''It is funny as you get a little bit older you get wiser. I used to be really methodical in how you prepare and play the game.

''I have gone though test matches and games and ticked every single box and had a shocker.

''Obviously, I won't be 100% physically as I haven't played a game for a while but I back myself with my knowledge of the game and the way I have prepared and my mental state.''

One thing though - he will not get too overexcited.

''If I do get selected then what can be the worst thing which can happen. I look at last year's Bledisloe and that was probably the worst thing that could happen - I dropped the first three balls.

'But I'm still here and I'm still smiling and I'm still keen to give it a burst.

''I'm just keen to get out there. If I'm starting or coming off the bench I just want to give it a crack.''
