You might describe Kaikorai as fresh this season.

Fresh players. Fresh approach.

The Demons had 12 players on debut in the opening game against Taieri.

They lost 37-21 but it was a decent start. And last weekend they beat a physical Zingari-Richmond side 37-12.

Tomorrow they will play Dunedin at Kettle Park. In such a short season every game is crucial.

But the main goal for Kaikorai is to get itself into the top six and be playing its best rugby when it matters most.

The Demons have shown promising signs already. Coach Andy Hunter is certainly thrilled with how his young side has performed in the opening two rounds.

They are not the biggest side. They are not the most experienced side. But they have shown enterprise and scored a couple of delightful tries against "a physical" Zingari-Richmond side.

"We’ve got a lot of players new to the grade and it is just exciting to watch them start to improve," Hunter said

Among the rookies to impress was powerful No 8 Semisi Ta’eiloa. He was in the boot of the Otago Boys’ pack last year and looks more than comfortable at premier level.

Hunter went even further.

"He is very impressive.

"I’m struggling to remember a young player coming straight out of school who has made such an impression."

Ta’eiloa barged his way over late in the win against the Colours to clinch a four-try bonus point. He got them into that position with an earlier charge up field.

Fullback Oliver Foote is rapid and only needs half a yard to ghost through.

First five Nic Proffit made some clever decisions and kicked into space well.

Others like Sam Jones had a cracking game. The converted blindside was dominant in the lineout and leads the tackle count for Kaikorai.

"He is just one of those quiet achievers. He does not often have big barnstorming runs, but he is doing a lot of work that often goes unnoticed.

Prop Jonah Aoina picked up a calf strain last week and is out for at least three weeks. He would have been useful against Dunedin.

Perhaps the game of the round shapes as the match between Green Island and Alhambra-Union at Miller Park.

Green Island has had a narrow win against Harbour and dispatched University by nearly 20 points last weekend.

AU had the bye first up but scored four tries in the final quarter to beat Southern.

Taieri is two from two and the defending champions will start as favourites against University at Peter Johnstone Park.

Zingari-Richmond and Harbour have started with a couple of losses each and will be looking to get off the mark at Montecillo.
