Marist top despite not yet hitting its straps

Marist sits top of the Southland premier club standings after seven games but captain Scott Eade was not bubbling with confidence when asked to assess its form to date this season.

Marist has won five of its seven games this season and holds a five-point lead over second-placed Woodlands in a tight race to the 2018 Galbraith Shield title.

However, Eade feels his team has not yet clicked.

"After the Woodlands game [on May 2], we had sort of a mid-season debrief and we were a little bit disappointed with how we had been playing," the first five-eighth said.

Marist then took on Blues last Saturday but was unable to respond with a win, losing 24-19.

However, Eade actually felt the team did show the improvement it was searching for despite the loss.

"I've just watched the game again on video and we made most of the play in that game, we played with the ball a lot. But we gave away two intercept tries and that hurt us," he said.

With the 2018 format including three full rounds, Eade felt Marist was in a good position in that it had not yet hit its straps but still found itself at the top of the standings.

Marist has been dealt a blow with wing Alatini Vaiha expected to miss the next three weeks because of an ankle injury.

Vaiha joined Marist last season when he was used in the midfield, before coach Marty Smith opted to shift him to the wing for this one.

The move was a good one with Vaiha arguably Marist's best player through the early stages of the season.

Eade conceded Vaiha's injury created a big hole to fill but said the club was in a good position in that it had depth in the outside backs.

He said it was not so well off in the tight-five stocks, particularly in the propping department.

Marist does possess two strong props in Shaun Stodart and Reuben Northover but Eade said they could not afford too many injuries in that area.

The Miller St boys' next assignment will be against Pirates-Old Boys tomorrow at Surrey Park.

In the first-round outing between the two teams, Pirates-Old Boys led 29-7 at one stage only to end up losing 39-34.

Eade said Pirates-Old Boys had assembled a quality team this season with outside backs Mike Molloy and Josh Buchan ensuring the combined side is a dangerous prospect.

One of the most intriguing match-ups tomorrow will be the battle of the openside flankers with Marist's Phil Halder set to square off against Pirates-Old Boys No7 Wade McRae.

Halder was one of the Stags' best players last year, while McRae has impressed to date in 2018 after a season off in 2017.

In other premier fixtures, Woodlands will host Star, while Blues will travel to Gore to take on the Eastern-Northern Barbarians.
