Old Boys has top spot sealed with three rounds of the Citizens Shield remaining.

The team has lost just one game - to Valley a fortnight ago - and leads the standings with 56 points.

It has the best attacking and defensive record in the competition. It is averaging more than 45 points a game while offering up a tad more than 19 at the other end.

Kurow lies in second place with 40 points.

Valley is five points further back and it is the big improver.

It started badly with just one win in its first six games. But since then, Valley has made a late charge and won its past six games.

A hardworking forward pack has laid the base for its rise.

It beat Kurow twice, including a 52-17 drubbing a week ago.

Maheno is in fourth place with 35 points but will move up one spot if it snaps Valley's winning streak tomorrow.

Regardless of who wins, both teams look to be safely through to the playoffs, as the fifth-placed Athletic-Marist (22 points) is too far back.

Excelsior has no chance of making the top four but its current form should send a warning to teams it must play during the final three rounds.

Excelsior had a slow start to the season when a number of its club members were late back from playing in Europe over the New Zealand summer.

It has managed just one win but has been competitive during the second half of the campaign and cannot be taken lightly.

It will be out to pick up points against Athletic-Marist.
