ABs lock fends off Razor question

Fabian Holland might be a rookie All Black but he has learned some veteran craft when it comes to dealing with a tricky question.

The Highlanders sensation offered a hint of a smile when his first interview of the new season ventured into the only rugby topic on everybody’s mind.

"What was my reaction to the Scott Robertson news?" Holland replied when asked just that by the Otago Daily Times yesterday.

"To be honest, I was at home, so I was just surrounded by family. I actually didn’t hear about it because I turned my phone off for about two weeks.

"Other than that, I don’t really want to comment. I’m just focusing on the Highlanders. I’ve put my All Blacks hat off and put my Highlanders hat on."

Holland was not exactly effusive when asked how he found playing for Robertson, dumped after two years in charge, but said he was grateful for the faith the coach showed in the first Dutch-born All Black.

"You’re always going to have a soft spot for someone who gave you your first crack at international level.

"It was my first year in the All Blacks. It’s hard not to enjoy it when you have the silver fern on your chest."

And if Highlanders coach Jamie Joseph is to replace Robertson?

"I’m just taking it week by week. I’m just preparing for the Highlanders season and hopefully playing my way into the All Blacks."

Joseph shapes as the strongest contender but has declined to confirm if he will be seeking the All Blacks job.

• Exciting halfback Cam Roigard has recommitted to the All Blacks, Hurricanes and Counties-Manukau to the end of 2029.

Roigard, whose current contract expires in 2027, said the chance to be part of a Lions tour in 2029 helped sway him.

"I’m loving my rugby right now and the opportunity to represent the All Blacks, the Hurricanes and Counties-Manukau here in New Zealand is something I don’t take for granted.

"It has always been a dream of mine since I was a kid to play Super Rugby and be an All Black and I want to continue living that dream."

The 25-year-old made his All Blacks debut against Australia in 2023 and has played 17 tests, scoring 12 tries to establish himself as a regular starter in the No 9 jersey.

Hurricanes coach Clark Laidlaw welcomed Roigard’s decision.

"He’s a strong character within the group, an outstanding professional, and we really look forward to having him with the team and the club over the next few years." Laidlaw said.
