Jaguares about to enter an unfamiliar environment

The South Americans are coming - well, actually, they should have just about arrived.

The Jaguares will play their first ever game in the South in the Super Rugby competition when they take on the Highlanders at Forsyth Barr Stadium on Saturday.

The side was set to arrive in Dunedin about 9.30am today, having left Buenos Aires yesterday morning [NZ time]. The side was scheduled to arrive in Auckland late last night and then catch the early flight from Auckland to Dunedin today.

It is a lengthy trip for the side, but travelling is just part of the job for a Jaguares player.

The side has made two trips to South Africa already and the game in Dunedin is the first of four matches in New Zealand and Australia. It will take on the Hurricanes in Wellington on May 17, then face the Waratahs in Sydney on May 25 and then the Reds on June 1.

It will then head home for the final two games of the season.

Playing in Dunedin will be a new experience for the Jaguares, although two of their players were in the Argentina World Cup squad which played at the just opened Forsyth Barr Stadium in 2011.

Hooker and Argentinian captain Agustin Creevy and loose forward Juan Manuel Leguizamon are the only players from the 2011 World Cup squad who are in the Jaguares squad, although both players have not seen much action this year.

It is not known if the duo will be playing in the Dunedin match, which is shaping up as key for both teams.

After beating the Stormers in Buenos Aires on Sunday, the Jaguares now sit in sixth place on the table, one place ahead of the Highlanders, though they have played one less game.

The two sides have only played each other once before. That was in 2016, when the Highlanders beat the Jaguares 34-8 in Buenos Aires, with Elliot Dixon scoring two tries.

The following year the sides did not play, as the Jaguares were in the South African conference which did not play against New Zealand teams.

Last year, the Jaguares were the one team from the South African conference the Highlanders did not play against.

The Highlanders have five games left in their regular season and four of those games are against teams from the South African conference.

After the Jaguares match the side will jump on a plane to travel to South Africa to take on the Lions and then the Stormers.

The side will then head home to play the Bulls in Dunedin on June 7.

The final game of the regular season will be against the Waratahs in Invercargill on June 14.
