Preparations for the arrival of the British and Irish Lions are under way, as the Dunedin City Council works on plans to construct a lighted pathway to guide the way to the venue.

The Highlanders will host the Lions at Forsyth Barr Stadium on June 13.To help generate some atmosphere and perhaps help visitors find their way to the venue, the DCC has tentative plans to light the way.

"What we are looking at is developing a lighted pathway from the centre of town along to the stadium but it is really, really early days in terms of its design," DCC community development and events manager Joy Gunn said.

"I can’t tell you much more about it, to be honest  .. ."

The council should have more concrete plans by the middle of next month, she said.

A budget of $10,000 has been set aside for the project.

"The idea is to have a bit of a carnival atmosphere around that evening for people."

About the same time,  a planetarium night was planned at the Otago Museum and people could go out to  Otago Peninsula on a double-decker bus, she said. The annual Puaka Matariki Festival  begins  later that week  and  will be followed by the Midwinter Carnival.
