Another former Highlander has headed to the Sunwolves.

Former midfield back Jason Emery joined the Japanese Super Rugby franchise this week and is the latest ex-Highlander to link up with his old coaches.

Emery (24) played for  the franchise from 2013 to 2017 but did not have a lot of luck in his time with the team.

He suffered some injuries and in 2016 was sent off for a tackle while an opponent was in mid-air.

He was suspended for more than a month and never got into reconsideration for the team in that year.

Last year, he ruptured his Achilles in a development game in early March and was gone for the season.

He played a few games at fullback for his province, Manawatu, at the end of last season wanting to carve out a new spot in the backline.

Emery was part of a crowded Highlanders midfield up against quality players such as Malakai Fekitoa, Richard Buckman, Rob Thompson and Matt Faddes.

He was a nice stepper but was prone to make mistakes and also not the biggest of players.

All up, he made 34 appearances for the side although many of those were off the bench.

He was not re-signed by the Highlanders for this season and has decided to throw his lot in with the Sunwolves.

He joins former Highlanders Hayden Parker, Robbie Robinson, Fumiaki Tanaka and Craig Millar in the Sunwolves squad.

Michael Little, who played for North Harbour for many years and trained with the Highlanders in pre-season at the end of 2016, has also joined the Sunwolves. He is the son of former All Black Walter Little and plays for Coco-Cola in Japan.

The Sunwolves are coached by former Highlanders coaches Jamie Joseph and Tony Brown. The side does not play the Highlanders in the Super Rugby competition this year. The Sunwolves face the Brumbies in their opening game of Super Rugby next Saturday in Tokyo.
