Otago midfielder Kilistina Moata'ane has retained her spot among the country's elite.

The 21-year-old was named in the Black Ferns 29-player contracted squad yesterday.

A year ago she bolted into New Zealand's first squad of professional women's 15-a-side rugby players.

She went on to be named in the Black Ferns side to tour the United States and France at the end of last year.

However, an ankle injury denied her the chance to go.

Also in the squad are four newly contracted players in Bay of Plenty's Luka Connor and Karli Faneva, Counties Manukau's Arihiana Marino-Tauhinu and Auckland's Natahlia Moors.

Black Ferns head coach Glenn Moore said he and the selectors believed balancing new and experienced players was crucial for creating greater depth.

''We're confident we have the mix right.

''We're in the fortunate position of being able to draw on the experience and skill of seasoned players like Kendra Cocksedge, Selica Winiata and Eloise Blackwell and pair them with new talent like Luka Connor and Karli Faneva.''

He said the newly contracted players had impressed in the Farah Palmer Cup last year, as well as in their determination to keep improving.

Being a contracted player did not guarantee a spot in the Black Ferns squad.

The team will have several training camps and will bring in extra players from the wider squad.

It plays Australia in tests on August 10 and August 17 in Perth and Auckland respectively.

They will be for the Laurie O'Reilly Memorial Trophy and act as curtain-raisers to Bledisloe Cup matches.
